Practical Lawn Maintenance Techniques No. 4

Other lawn maintenance and management measures

Top application soil

1. Concept: Apply a thin layer of fine sand or crushed soil to the lawn that has been established or is being established.

2. Function:

The purpose of application in lawn planting is to cover and fix seeds, branches and other propagation materials to promote germination and emergence and improve survival rate.

On established lawns, lawn covering can serve a variety of purposes, including controlling the hay layer, leveling the surface of sports lawns, promoting the recovery of injured or diseased lawns, protecting fruit collars in winter, changing the properties of the lawn growing medium, etc.

(1) Materials applied to surface soil

Soil: Sand: Organic matter is a mixture of 1:1:1 or 1:1:2; all use sand.

(2) Period of surface soil application

Warm season turfgrass is grown from April to July or September; cool season turfgrass is grown from March to June or October to November.

(3) Number of surface soil applications

It is generally applied more frequently to lawns such as courtyards and parks, but less frequently; greens in golf courses should be applied sparingly and frequently.

punch holes

Concept: Also known as soil core removal or soil core farming, it is a method of drilling many holes in the lawn with special machines and digging out soil cores.

Function: Improve soil aeration and water permeability.

Drilling time:

The best time to drill holes is when the lawn is in its peak growth season, has strong resilience, and is not under stress.

Cool season lawns are grown in late summer and early autumn; warm season lawns are grown in late spring and early summer.

Rolling

Minor damage to the lawn surface can be corrected by rolling. In the past, rolling back and forth was used to improve the smoothness of the surface of sports field lawns.

In the absence of sufficient compaction time after tilling, rolling the soil can provide:

•Flat, solid seeding surface.

•Rolling after sowing can ensure good contact between seeds and soil.

• After planting the lawn with branches and turf, the chance of rolling the lawn seedlings to dry out and die will be reduced.

•In areas with frozen soil, alternating freezing and thawing may cause the lawn surface to be uneven. Rolling can be used to press the protruding lawn back to its original position. Otherwise, these turf grasses will die or become uncovered due to mowing.

•Turf producers can also roll the turf before peeling to obtain a uniform thickness of turf.

•Most rollers for lawns are water-filled so that the weight can be achieved by adjusting the amount of water.
