Lawn can purify the air, absorb dust, prevent noise, resist pollution and drug addiction, reduce soil erosion, improve soil structure, slow down solar radiation, protect and restore vision, green and beautify the city, and improve urban ecology. The lawn area is constantly expanding. However, domestic lawns generally degrade and become deserted in 3-5 years, and some lawns even become deserted after they are established. The service life of lawns with perfect maintenance technology abroad is more than 10-15 years. The reason is that my country’s lawn maintenance technology is not mature enough, mostly due to improper or delayed maintenance techniques such as pruning, fertilizing, irrigation, and pest control. The key points of lawn maintenance and management techniques are briefly described below.
1. Pruning
Even mowing is the most important aspect of lawn care. If the lawn is not trimmed in time, the upper part of the stem grows too fast and sometimes sets seeds, which hinders and affects the growth of the trampling-resistant grass in the lower part, turning it into a wasteland.
The lawn mowing period is generally from March to November, and sometimes it is also necessary to mow in warm winters. The lawn mowing height generally follows the 1/3 principle. The first mowing is performed when the lawn is 10-12cm high, and the stubble height is 6-8cm. The number of times you mow depends on how quickly your lawn grows. High-quality foreign lawns are mowed more than 10 or even hundreds of times a year. Usually May-June is the period when the lawn grows most vigorously. It is pruned 1-2 times every 7-10 days, and 1-2 times every 10-15 days at other times. The lawn has been pruned many times. It not only has developed rhizomes and strong covering ability, but also has low height, thin leaves and high ornamental value.
When mowing the lawn, the mowing strips must be parallel and the direction must be changed each time you mow. During drought, you can place the trimmed grass on the lawn to cool down, but it cannot be left for a long time, otherwise the lawn will easily become soft, grow slowly and breed bacteria. The edges of the lawn are generally trimmed with scissors to maintain a beautiful appearance.
2. Fertilization
Fertilization is another important step in lawn care. The more often a lawn is mowed, the more nutrients are removed from the soil, so sufficient nutrients must be replenished to restore growth. Lawn fertilization is generally based on nitrogen fertilizers and compound fertilizers as well. The appropriate amount of fertilizer is 28-12kg per 667m2, that is, 15-18g/m2. The frequency of fertilization varies according to different lawn types. Generally, lawns need to be fertilized 7-8 times a year.
3. Watering
Due to different varieties of lawn grass, their drought resistance is somewhat different. During their vigorous growth stage, they all need sufficient water. Therefore, timely watering is another measure to maintain a good lawn. Generally, in the high temperature and drought season, water once every 5-7 days in the morning and evening to moisten the roots to 10-15cm. Watering in other seasons is appropriate to protect the roots of the soil and maintain a certain humidity. However, it is best to use multi-directional spraying instead of sprinkler irrigation when watering to maintain uniform irrigation, save water, and at the same time remove dust from the grass surface.
4. Drill holes and cross the soil to ventilate the soil
Lawn fields need to be drilled and soil aerated 1-2 times a year. Use a drilling machine for large areas of lawn. After drilling the hole, fill the lawn with sand, and then use a tooth rake or a hard broom to sweep the sand evenly so that the sand penetrates deep into the hole to maintain courage and improve the water seepage of the deep soil. The thickness of the sand layer on the grass surface should not exceed 0.5cm. To aerate small areas and light loam lawns, use a digging fork to dig forks at a distance and depth of 8-10cm. The forks should go straight in and out to avoid bringing up soil clods. Different specifications of forks can be changed for different soil types, and shovels can also be used for work. When mowing, some lawn grass root systems can be cut off to promote vigorous root growth. The best time to drill holes and cross the soil for aeration is in early spring every year.
5. Remove weeds
When weeding, master the principles of “weeding early”, “weeding” and “weeding”. Use a knife when the amount is small, and dig out with a shovel when the amount is large and concentrated, and then level the ground before replanting. Spray on a calm and sunny day, when the temperature is preferably higher than 25°C. At this time, the effect of the drug is very rapid, and the dosage can be halved. Herbicides can be more effective when mixed properly. But be careful to avoid backfiring.
6. Disease and pest control
Most lawn diseases are fungi, such as rust, powdery mildew, sclerotinia, anthracnose, etc. They often exist on dead plant roots, stems and leaves in the soil. When encountering suitable climatic conditions, they will infect and harm the lawn, causing the growth of the lawn to be hindered, causing it to turn yellow or die in patches or patches. Prevention and control methods usually include the use of fungicides for prevention or treatment based on the disease’s infection patterns. During control, the lawn should be mowed low and then sprayed.
7. Renewal, rejuvenation and soil rolling
If the lawn appears bald or partially dead, it needs to be rejuvenated in time. That is, when fertilizing in early spring or late autumn, mix the germinated grass seeds and fertilizer and sprinkle them evenly on the lawn, or use a hob to cut slits in the lawn every 20cm and apply fertilizer. Add compost to promote the growth of new roots. For lack of soil and root leakage caused by frequent pruning, watering, and cleaning of the withered grass layer, soil should be added and rolled during the lawn’s germination period or after pruning, usually once a year, and rolling should be done more often than in early spring after the soil has thawed.
