1. Green competition venue lawn maintenance
Maintenance of the green lawn before the game can be said to be the top priority of the entire competition venue lawn maintenance. This is because the green lawn is the most difficult and most prone to problems in golf course lawn maintenance. It has the most direct impact on the players’ performance during the entire competition and is the area that TV and print media pay the most attention to.
During the competition, the green speed requirements are very high, and the green must be kept fast, slightly hard, and beautiful. The championship-level competition green speed requirement is more than 10.5 feet, and the lawn mowing height is generally controlled at 3-3.8 mm. The measures usually taken mainly include: mowing, fertilizing, pest control, water control, drilling, combing, root cutting, sanding, rolling, etc.
In the early stage of green lawn maintenance, the lawn should be kept high. As the competition time approaches, the lawn height should be gradually lowered until it reaches the competition lawn height requirement. During the relevant maintenance period, the lawn height should also be kept high, which can promote the growth of lawn grass roots and leaves. In order to keep the mowing height of the green lawn at 3-3.8 mm, the most effective way is to use a new type of fast green lawn mower. Using a fast green lawn mower can cut a lawn with a high ball speed compared to ordinary green lawn mowers, and there is no need to mow the lawn very low. Fertilization is generally combined with moisture control, drilling, combing, root cutting, sanding, and rolling. Fertilization should adjust the proportion of N, P, K and trace element fertilizers according to the current status of the green. The purpose of pest control is to reduce disease spots, make the lawn density, color, elasticity and green speed of each area on the green surface uniform and consistent, and achieve the best effect. In the period approaching the competition, the number of watering should be gradually reduced according to the weather conditions. Generally, watering should be done once a day two days before the competition. Punching, combing, cutting roots, spreading sand, rolling, etc. are effective measures to ensure that the green is fast, hard and beautiful. Holes are generally punched with hollow holes, which can improve the aeration performance of the green soil; each green must first be carefully filled with sand manually in places with obvious depressions, and then mechanically spread sand. Sanding should be done many times, and sanding should also be done after drilling. Multiple sanding can form a smooth green surface. Rolling can improve the flatness and hardness of the green surface and increase the speed of the green ball. Rolling can be done after spreading sand or after mowing the grass.
Large-scale competitions also have higher requirements for the difficulty of the greens. Golf courses generally renovate greens that do not meet the difficulty requirements, mainly by raising the surface slope of the greens and increasing the length of the slopes before and after the greens. After the renovation is completed, lawn maintenance measures must be followed up. Through these measures, the thickness of the green lawn withering layer can be reduced, and the density, hardness and smoothness of the lawn can be increased.
2. Maintenance of the lawn at the teeing ground
The requirements for the lawn at the teeing ground are: 10 mm in height, suitable soil hardness, uniform lawn density and color. According to the difficulty of the game, some holes need to be longer and the teeing ground needs to be moved back. Once it is determined that the teeing ground needs to be moved back, it should be implemented as soon as possible to leave more maintenance time for the moved teeing ground.
For problematic teeing grounds, a renovation plan should be made. Measures such as fertilization, pest control, drilling, grass combing, root cutting, sanding, and rolling should be adopted for all teeing grounds to ensure that the soil hardness of the teeing ground is appropriate and the density and color of the lawn are uniform.
3. Maintenance of the lawn at the fairway competition venue
Large-scale competitions generally narrow the width of the 4-par and 5-par fairways, and sometimes change the shorter 5-par holes to 4-par holes, which requires the corresponding fairways to be renovated. The height of the fairway lawn is 10 mm, and the lawn density and color must be uniform. All fairways should be fertilized, pest and disease control, drilling, grass combing, root cutting, sanding, rolling and other measures to make the lawn density and color uniform and improve the appearance quality of the lawn.
4. Maintenance of lawns in semi-grass and long grass areas
During competitions, the height of the lawn in the semi-grass area is 25 mm, and the width of the transitional lawn is 1.5 meters. The height of the lawn in the long grass area is 70-100 mm, and the height of landscape grass (such as reeds) can grow according to its natural height. Lawn maintenance includes daily management measures such as fertilization and pruning.
5. Maintenance of bunkers
In order to increase the difficulty of the golf course, it is sometimes necessary to increase the number of green and fairway bunkers, increase the slope of the bunker edges, and repair and reinforce the bunker edges washed by heavy rain. The thickness of the bunker sand layer should reach 13-15 cm, and the thickness of each bunker sand layer should be the same. When raking the sand, it should be leveled in the direction of the green flagpole.
6. Maintenance of water obstacles
Mainly improve the water quality of the lake in the golf course. Fountains can be installed in the open waters of the lake, which can not only increase the landscape effect but also improve the water quality. The edge of the lake should also be trimmed and some beautiful aquatic plants can be transplanted, and wild animals such as wild ducks can be released.
7. Maintenance of trees and flowers
Nowadays, large-scale competitions are generally broadcast on TV, which requires the golf course to be more beautiful. Flower attractions can be added near the clubhouse, access road, driving range, etc. of the golf course, and beautiful trees can be transplanted. In some areas of the fairway, some taller trees can be transplanted in advance according to the difficulty requirements of the fairway. Fertilize and water the trees and flowers regularly.
